The landscape in the Salzkammergut is as varied as the hiking trails which run through it. Hiking at Lake Wolfgangsee is a pleasure for young and old alike.

Get to the starting point of your hike by boat - in both Strobl and St. Wolfgang you can board the excursion boat which takes you to Strobl, St. Gilgen or Abersee. You can start out on your hike there at Lake Wolfgangsee or head into the mountains.

The obvious thing to do in Wolfgangsee is investigate the tracks of ‘Heiligen Wolfgang’, the legendary founder of your holiday destination. Follow the Bishop of Regensburg up the Falkenstein, bathe your eyes in the medicinal water of the “Augenbründl” healing well, turn the wishing stone and shed all burdens at the in the Celtic stone. Don’t forget to ring the bell! Legend has it that if you can get the bell to peal three times in a single pull of the rope, then you get a wish free. Want to find out more?

In the town of Strobl en route to Fellmayerbad (community pool), then on the narrow path along the lake through the nature conservation area of Blinklingmoos past an avenue of birch trees, glades = extensive outdoor swimming area. There is always a superb view to St. Wolfgang! Continue to Pitznerbauer; on the left side there is a lovely old farmhouse property which has direct access to the lake! Cross the Zinkenbach through a small forest you come to Abersee parish church. Around an hour’s walk!

You can also continue to St. Gilgen, it is best to follow the bike path through the forest. Then follow the footpath along the road to St. Gilgen. You can turn-off into one of the little side streets to get to the lovely farmseads, there are also camping areas right at the lake. In Abersee and Gschwand there are what are known as ‘Stoffbauern’, who sell sheeps’ milk produce direct from the farm. The produce has received several awards!

In St. Gilgen after walking for around 2 ½ hours we recommend refreshments at the Fischerwirt right at the lake an in the other guesthouses and coffee houses!
